Sugar: we consume it on a daily basis. It's in our soda, our favorite desert, and our Sunday morning pancakes. But rarely do we stop to wonder: where did it come from? Who produced it? And under what conditions? Oxfam UT is proud to present sugar farmer Francisco Ferreira as he discusses the implications of Fair Trade on his life and his community. Ferreira is the President of Cañera del Sur, a sugarcane cooperative in Iturbe, Paraguay. Formed in 1961 by a group of farmers hoping to collectively negotiate better prices for their cane, Cañera del Sur became Fair Trade Certified in 1999. As a result, Cañera del Sur's members receive a higher price for their product and social premiums like reinvestment in the community.
