The Plan: Once everyone is together, raise your other arm like a clock hand and begin to swing it down in a circle, one small movement at a time, chanting "tick" with each movement (like a ticking clock). Start the chant slow and quiet, slowly picking up speed and getting louder. The other participants will quickly join in. This is the human clock of time running out to act on climate change -- the heart of the TckTckTck campaign around the world.

Welcome Austinites!

Greetings! Welcome to the Austin Oxfam Action Corps blog! Please use this site as a resource to find out about updates, meetings, and events in our area.

This year's campaign is devoted to education, outreach, and advocacy surrounding current climate change legislation. Currently, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 ("ACES") has passed the Energy and Commerce committee, and in the next few months will be up for a floor vote in the House of Representatives.

Specifically, Oxfam America is focusing on a component of this bill that provides funding for international adaptation. In policy speak, the term "adaptation" refers to the ability for communities - here and abroad - to prepare for increased risks of natural disasters attributed to climate change. Climate change poses a significant threat to stability and security throughout the world, and it is already affecting vulnerable people who lack the resources to prepare themselves to the changing climate.

Strong U.S. legislation is essential to the success of international agreements this year in Copenhagen. These talks are the next phase of agreements that follow-up the Kyoto Protocol Agreement of 1997.

The time to act is now. The Oxfam Action Corps (OAC) is a community of people around the country who are mobilizing efforts to speak out to urge the public and their own representatives to support this vital legislation. In Austin, we are planning movie screenings, concert and media outreach, and other events, centered around bringing people together to take action.

These are critical times - let your voice be heard!

Feel free to reach out with your ideas and questions, and to find out how you can get involved and make a difference. Email local Austin OAC Organizers Chelsea and Charmagne at austin.oxfamactioncorps@gmail.com - we look forward to meeting you!
